Implicit Modeling of Screw Threads for Bone-implant Finite Element Analysis

چکیده
Introduction The development and evaluation of orthopaedic devices are commonly assisted by finite element analysis [1]. Computational models are usually simplified through approximations to enable efficient simulations, without affecting the outcome of relative comparisons between different implant designs or configurations. The physical behavior of the bonescrew interface prior to osseointegration of the implant is not yet well understood [2]. Explicit modeling of screw threads with frictional contact is computationally expensive for complex bone-implant systems, while a perfectly bonded interface, which is commonly used, may be an oversimplification. The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate a technique to approximate the behavior of a finely threaded screw using a smooth cylinder with the threads implicitly represented through interfacial contact conditions.

Evaluating the impact of length and thread pitch on the stress distribution in dental implants and surrounding bone using finite element method
longevity of osseointegrated implants are intensely influenced by biomechanical factors. Control of these factors prevents mechanical complications, which include fracture of screws, components, or materials veneering the framework. In this study, the impact of length and threads pitch of dental implants on the stress distribution and maximum Von Mises stress in implant-abutment complex and ja...
متن کاملPrediction of stress shielding around an orthopedic screw: Using stress and strain energy density as mechanical stimuli
Using finite element analysis, a parametric study was developed to compare stress and strain energy density (SED), in order to determine which stimuli might be better for predicting stress shielding in bone-screw models. Defined stimuli transfer parameters demonstrated that stress and SED (strong candidates for initiating the bone remodeling process) are transferred distinctively between an imp...

This work presents a numerical approach in order to predict the influence of implant material stiffness in a femoral component design when submitted in compression. The implant success depends on the transferred load to the neighboring bone. The finite element method can be used to analysis the stress and strain distribution in the femoral component allowing to improve the implant selection. Fo...
متن کاملAn investigation of tensile strength of Ti6Al4V titanium screw inside femur bone using finite element and experimental tests
The geometric optimization of orthopedic screws can considerably increase their orthopedic efficiency. Due to the high geometric parameters of orthopedic screws, a finite element simulation is an effective tool for analyzing and forecasting the effect of the parameters on the load-bearing capacity of different types of screws and bones. Thus, in the present study, the tensile strength of a typi...
متن کاملComparative 3d Fem Analysis of Three Different Dental Implant Shapes
This paper presents the results of numerical modeling using the finite element method of three implants. Geometric models of individual parts of the analyzed system (implant, abutment and screw) and the standard models of the bone and the crown were built in the Ideas NX environment. On the basis of real geometric models the fully three-dimensional numerical models were built. The calculations ...
